Elwyn Brooks was in print with a poem of his own creation at the age of ten. His prize-winning effort was published in the "Woman's Home Companion" in 1909. Eleven years later he was the editor of the "Cornell Daily Sun" at Cornell University in New York. After graduation, he was on staff at the "New Yorker" magazine and wrote for many years there and at "Harper's Magazine." His work during these years were mostly satirical essays.
At the age of 53 he wrote his first children's book about a community-wise spider named Charlotte; I cried at the end. He wrote his last book for children at age 71. His three children's books have been made into movies, study guides and school curriculum--they are definitely classics. He also won the National Medal for Literature in 1971.
