Born in the small village of Chawton, Jane Austen was the seventh child of a clergyman. She was taught by her father and never married. Her home was with her parents in a quiet parsonage life. Her final years were plagued with ill health and she died young in Winchester, England. If not for her stories, her life would not have been noticed at all.

But her seven books made a decided impact on the world. Her first novel, originally called "First Impressions," but later changed to "Pride and Prejudice," is referred to as the "finest novel by the greatest female novelist." She loved reading books by Samuel Richardson and Henry Fielding. No one else has so aptly portrayed common English life in the 1800''s.
