Edinburgh, Scotland was the birthplace of Professor Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson III. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all lighthouse keepers and inventors. His favorite authors were Shakespeare, Walter Scott and John Bunyan. At seventeen he began college at the University of Edinburgh, but he soon gave up engineering studies and went on a voyage with his father. Thus the love of adventure on the high seas was born.

The next years were filled with travel to many towns in France, including Paris, where he met his future wife, Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne. Then on to San Francisco and the islands of the Pacific. So many of his books were inspired by these travels. Due to poor health, he passed away at age 44 on Upolu, one of the Samoan Islands, but not before sharing the many stories that inspire us to dare the seas.
